Nuno Gonçalves debates AI impact at “Café com Ciência” event

On October 8th, the Salão Nobre of the Assembleia da República hosted a “Café com Ciência”, an event organized by the Education and Science Committee and the Ciência Viva Agency, in collaboration with the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees, focusing on the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on society. The event, moderated by Ana Noronha, saw a diverse group of experts discussing the responsible use of AI. Despite the limited time for each speaker, the discussions were rich and insightful.

Prof. Nuno Gonçalves highlighted the dual nature of AI, emphasizing its potential to both benefit society and exacerbate existing inequalities. He stressed the urgency of addressing AI’s potential to widen social disparities, arguing that proactive measures are essential to ensure AI contributes to reducing inequalities rather than increasing them. Prof. Nuno full speech is available through this link.
